Railway employees now also wear body cameras

They are to scare off potential attackers in dangerous situations: After Berlin, Cologne and Nuremberg, Deutsche Bahn now also equips security personnel in Hamburg with body cameras, so-called body cams. According to the railway, they are intended primarily for employees at the main station and in the S-Bahn stations in the city center. In the S-Bahn trains but the Body cams would be removed.

Activated only in case of danger
The use of cameras is precisely regulated: In two-strip an employee should carry the small camera in the bright yellow reflective vest. On the signs also point to the video opportunity. The recording should only be activated in escalating situations and after clear indication - then recognizable by a red light. The records are stored encrypted according to the railway. Only the federal police, which already uses Body cams in Hamburg, could access the material.

"They protect against attacks"
"Body cams secure evidence and protect against attacks, which mean more security for DB employees and railway customers," said Deutsche Bahn AG's security chief Hans-Hilmar Richie. A built-in monitor, which shows an attacker's own behavior, also has a preventive effect. In Hamburg, about half of the 300 security forces were trained for this camera deployment. "Our experience so far has been consistently positive: security teams with Body cam have not been attacked."

The police in the Hanseatic city work in certain situations with body cameras, such as in the fight against violent crime. According to the Senate response to a small request from the CDU parliamentary faction in mid-August, the police are currently holding nine Body cams for use.
